Serge de Vries on his work: “When I walk into my studio in the morning, I switch on the lamps and my computer and begin. I am not a painter who first makes ten sketches. My study lies in the photographs I take of the subject. I paint wet on wet. In oil. Realistically, but with speed. Working photographically is not my aim. On the contrary, I want you to see the brushstrokes. With them I try to guide you, to draw your attention to the part of my work that I think matters. That part gets just a little more attention than the rest. Just a little more detail. As a ground I always choose a brown tint. White I find too white; I prefer to work up from the dark. On that ground I make my sketch and colour it in. I mix all my colours myself, from red, yellow, blue and white. Because if the printer can do it, so can I. It is the different gradations that make something lifelike.”

Serge de Vries paints ordinary, everyday things that, consciously or not, give us a good feeling.

Although the little works are painted realistically, it is not his aim to paint photographically.

Serge de Vries’s brushstroke is important. With it he tries to guide viewers and draw their attention to the part of the work he considers important.

Serge de Vries over zijn werk: "Als ik ’s ochtends mijn atelier binnenstap, klik ik de lampen en mijn computer aan en begin. Ik ben geen schilder die eerst tien schetsen maakt. Mijn studie zit hem in de foto’s die ik van het onderwerp maak. Ik schilder nat op nat. Met olieverf. Realistisch, maar wel met snelheid. Fotografisch werken is niet mijn doel. Ik wil juist dat je de penseelstreken ziet. Daarmee probeer ik je te sturen. Je aandacht te trekken naar dat deel van mijn werk dat ik belangrijk vind. Dat deel krijgt net iets meer aandacht dan de rest. Met net iets meer details. Als ondergrond kies ik altijd voor een bruintint. Wit vind ik te wit. Ik werk liever vanuit het donker. Op die ondergrond maak ik mijn schets en die kleur ik in. Al mijn kleuren meng ik zelf, met rood, geel, blauw en wit. Want als de printer het kan, kan ik het ook. Het zijn de verschillende gradaties die iets levensecht maken".

Serge de Vries schildert gewone, alledaagse dingen die bewust of onbewust ons een goed gevoel geven.

Ondanks de realistisch geschilderde werkjes is het niet zijn doel om fotografisch te schilderen.

De penseelstreek van Serge de Vries is belangrijk. Daarmee probeert hij de kijker te sturen en hun aandacht te trekken naar dat deel van het werk dat hij belangrijk vindt.
