The remarkable paintings of this Rotterdam artist (1965) have grown into a highly personal style. Working with great precision from a sketch, atmospheric scenes emerge on the canvas in which elegant figures bask in a southern European light. Sultry, dreamlike table rituals or an afternoon at the beach are Aline’s favourite themes. Nothing happens; these are scenes held still. Animals simply sit at the table too, visibly enjoying the pleasant languor of the shade. Exotic flora marks the edges; nostalgic crockery, filled glasses and fruit cover the large tables that stand at the centre, symmetrical, determining the monumental composition.

The paintings are disquieting and balanced at the same time. The colouring is full of contrasts yet harmonious. Aline Jansma spends a great deal of time building up her colour; in many layers this creates a rich painterly quality that feels classical.

Alongside the large paintings on linen, Aline makes beautiful small panels on wood — miniatures, penetrating and refined, with the same attention and craftsmanship of a painter who goes her own way in the contemporary art world, with every respect and appreciation for tradition. Her linocuts are a matter of craft as well: in black and white she shows the same attention and skill. Here she combines her own poems with striking illustrations, where the layering again yields an image that is atmospheric, pleasing and certainly compelling.

De opmerkelijke schilderijen van deze Rotterdamse kunstenares (1965) hebben zich ontwikkeld in een zeer persoonlijke stijl. Zeer nauwkeurig ontstaan vanuit een schets op het doek sfeervolle taferelen waar elegante figuren zich koesteren in een Zuid Europees licht. Zwoele dromerige tafelrituelen of een middagje aan het strand zijn favoriete thema’s van Aline. Er gebeurt niets, het zijn verstarde scènes. Dieren zitten eenvoudigweg mee aan tafel en genieten zichtbaar van de aangename loomheid in de schaduw. Exotische flora markeert de rand, nostalgisch servies, gevulde glazen en fruit vullen de grote tafels die hier centraal en symmetrisch de monumentale compositie bepalen.

De schilderijen zijn bevreemdend en tegelijk evenwichtig. De kleurstelling is vol contrasten maar tegelijk harmonisch. Aline Jansma besteed veel tijd aan de opbouw van de kleur, in vele lagen ontstaat zo een rijke picturale kwaliteit die klassiek aandoet.

Naast de grote schilderijen op linnen maakt Aline prachtige kleine paneeltjes op hout, miniaturen, indringend en verfijnd met dezelfde aandacht en het vakmanschap van een schilder die haar eigen gang gaat in het hedendaagse kunstcircuit met alle respect en waardering voor traditie. Ambachtelijk ook zijn Aline’s linodrukken, in zwart-wit demonstreert ze eenzelfde aandacht en vaardigheid. Hier combineert ze haar eigen gedichten met markante illustraties waar ook de gelaagdheid een beeld oplevert dat stemmig en aangenaam en zeker boeiend is.
