Edith Brouwer is a printmaker. In her studio in Amsterdam she makes linocuts and etchings. She read Cultural Studies at the University of Amsterdam and has been making her own linocuts since 2014.

An important idea in her work is what she calls “calm chaos”, after the book by Sandro Veronesi: the state of mind in which the wish to be alone goes together with the wish to belong somewhere.

That is exactly what you see again in the prints. Usually a single figure in an empty field — a walker, a cyclist, someone reading — drawn in a sparing line and printed on small wooden blocks. The colour stays muted: blue-grey, ochre, terracotta.

Edith Brouwer is grafisch kunstenaar. In haar atelier in Amsterdam maakt zij linosneden en etsen. Ze studeerde Culturele Studies aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam en maakt sinds 2014 haar eigen linosnedes.

Een belangrijk gegeven in haar werk is wat zij “kalme chaos” noemt, naar het boek van Sandro Veronesi: de gemoedstoestand waarin het verlangen om alleen te zijn samengaat met het verlangen ergens bij te horen.

Dat is precies wat je in de prenten terugziet. Meestal één figuur in een leeg vlak — een wandelaar, een fietser, iemand die leest — getrokken in een spaarzame lijn en gedrukt op kleine houten blokken. De kleur blijft gedempt: blauwgrijs, oker, terracotta.
