Judith Koning studied at the Amsterdam University of the Arts (1996) and the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (1998). She photographs, films, works with textile, ceramics and thread, and most of all likes making installations. In 2025 she received the KCARS Stimuleringsprijs for art and culture.

Second-hand material is her starting point. She often buys something without ever using it, for the story that might lie behind it: who owned it, what was it for? “I really do give a little jump of happiness when I come across a small beauty in the charity shop.”

Nature, birds, animals and flowers are her subject; rhythm and regularity her way of working. “The work gives shape to longing. A leaning towards romance, fairy tales, humour and beauty.” Alongside her three-dimensional work she photographs the beauty around her every day for her blog Keep van Jute — because what you pay attention to grows.

At ARTACASA this comes together in small bird portraits: a robin, a kingfisher, a barn owl, a godwit or a crane, in mixed media and textile on vintage damask or linen, sometimes with a small piece of paper from an old bird book worked into it.

Tweedehands materiaal is haar vertrekpunt. Vaak koopt ze iets zonder het ooit te verwerken, om het verhaal dat erachter zou kunnen zitten: wie heeft het in bezit gehad, waar diende het voor? „Ik krijg echt een sprongetje van geluk als ik een kleine schoonheid in de kringloopwinkel tegen kom.”

Natuur, vogels, dieren en bloemen zijn haar onderwerp; ritme en regelmaat haar manier van werken. „Het werk beeldt het verlangen uit. Een hang naar romantiek, sprookjes, humor en schoonheid.” Naast haar ruimtelijk werk fotografeert ze dagelijks de schoonheid om zich heen voor haar blog Keep van Jute — want waar je aandacht aan schenkt, groeit.

Bij ARTACASA komt dat samen in kleine vogelportretten: een roodborstje, ijsvogel, kerkuil, grutto of kraanvogel, in gemengde techniek en textiel op vintage damast of linnen, soms met een stukje papier uit een oud vogelboek erin verwerkt.
