The paintings show recognisable, everyday subjects. It is a brief moment of wonder. Time is stopped for an instant so that one beautiful moment can be caught. The painter spends a great deal of time making a mere fraction of time visible. Once it has been painted, that moment can last for ever. What came before it and what happens afterwards is not important.

Koos ten Kate’s paintings come out of her own imagination and visual memory. She also uses photographs from newspapers and magazines — not to copy them slavishly, but rather to distil from them the shape or the proportions of a body. What does an eye, a nose, an ear or a hand look like, how is it built up, where do the shadows fall.

Once the first strokes of paint are on the panel, the way forward often shows itself. Sometimes the painting is finished as though it had always been there; sometimes it means going on endlessly, taking away, sanding and adding. Putting the panel aside and picking it up again months later can lead to new insights as well. The first stage of painting is the hardest; after that it becomes easier. Along the way she is sometimes given little gifts of imagery, and that is what makes painting so exciting for her.

The style is figurative, yet detached from reality. The human and animal figures are by turns endearing, strange and moving. The aim is humour and surprise, something that stirs the imagination. The paintings show the outward appearance of a person or an animal, but they are never entirely perfect. So perhaps a reflection of reality after all, because nobody is perfect.

Op de schilderijen zijn afbeeldingen te zien van herkenbare alledaagse onderwerpen. Het is een kortstondig moment van verwondering. De tijd wordt heel even stilgezet om dat ene mooie moment te kunnen pakken. De schilder besteedt heel veel tijd om slechts een fractie van tijd zichtbaar te maken. Eenmaal afgebeeld kan dit moment een eeuwigheid duren. Wat eraan vooraf gaat en wat er daarna gebeurt is niet belangrijk.

De schilderijen van Koos ten Kate ontstaan vanuit haar eigen fantasie en beeldgeheugen. Daarnaast maakt ze gebruik van foto’s uit kranten en tijdschriften. Niet om ze klakkeloos na te schilderen, maar meer om de vorm of lichaamsverhouding eruit te destilleren. Hoe ziet een oog, neus, oor of hand eruit en hoe is het opgebouwd, waar liggen de schaduwen.

Als de eerste verfstreken op het paneel staan dan wijst zich de schilderweg vaak vanzelf. Soms is het schilderij zo af alsof het er al was, soms is het eindeloos lang doorgaan, weghalen schuren en toevoegen. Ook het paneel wegzetten en na maanden weer oppakken wil ook wel eens tot nieuwe inzichten leiden. De eerste schilderfase is het moeilijkst, daarna gaat het makkelijker. Onderweg krijgt ze soms beeld cadeautjes en dat maakt voor haar het schilderen zo spannend.

De stijl is figuratief, maar toch los van de werkelijkheid. De mens en dierfiguren zijn soms lief, vreemd en ontroerend. De bedoeling is humor en verbazing, iets dat de fantasie prikkelt. De schilderijen laten het uiterlijk van een mens of dier zien, maar die zijn nooit helemaal perfect. Dus misschien toch een afspiegeling van de werkelijkheid, want niemand is perfect.
