Renee Toonen

Renee Toonen (Gouda, 1966) spent many years making made-to-measure shirts for musicians and theatre makers. Since 2017 she has worked full-time as an embroidery artist.

She embroiders and cuts: birds and portraits, finely executed and often set in a small box or frame. An apparently ordinary object ends up, in her hands, in a context where you do not expect it — and that is exactly the point.

Her work has been shown in the Netherlands since 2018, won the audience award at the Leiden textile festival in 2021, and in 2025 was shown at the Textile Biennale in Australia.

Renee Toonen (Gouda, 1966) maakte jarenlang overhemden op maat voor musici en theatermakers. Sinds 2017 werkt ze fulltime als borduurkunstenaar.

Ze borduurt en knipt: vogels en portretten, fijn uitgevoerd en vaak in een doosje of lijst gevat. Een op het oog gewoon voorwerp komt bij haar in een context terecht waar je het niet verwacht, en dat is precies de bedoeling.

Haar werk is sinds 2018 in Nederland te zien, won in 2021 de publieksprijs van het Leidse textielfestival en was in 2025 te zien op de Textiel Biënnale in Australië.
