Tamar Rubinstein
You will not often come across an untitled work by Tamar Rubinstein. Usually there is a clear connection between what is shown and the title. Sometimes the title clarifies; sometimes it raises questions instead. That those questions cannot always be answered is her intention: talking too much about art is not her favourite occupation.
In the series of five linocuts, however, the theme is obvious: mobility in the literal and the figurative sense. Moving, getting about, or standing still in a traffic jam while being able to telephone from anywhere — it is something we can see all around us. The animals join in, in the wake of their owners, whether they want to or not.
Lately Rubinstein has been working mainly on paper, with mixed media in the widest sense of the word. Literally anything within her reach runs the risk of being incorporated into a work of art. So we find bottle caps, scraps of newspaper, pieces of silver paper and a great many kinds of packaging material, integrated into, say, an invented landscape or the interior of a French attic room.
With chalk, gouache, oil, watercolour and pencil, among other things, the found objects — which are also an important source of inspiration for the work taking shape — are given a new function. She often dives into the collection of collage material she has built up over the years in search of the finishing touch for a work in hand; sometimes a freshly found object, worthless to anyone else perhaps, is the direct reason to begin and to build something around it.
